Samsung has launched the Galaxy Z Fold8 in Australia, opening pre-orders for its latest book-style foldable from $2,699 before local sales begin on 14 August. Samsung’s Australian product pages put the handset at 201 grams and claim up to 26 hours of video playback.

For Australian buyers, the launch is mostly practical: price, shipping date and carrier access. Samsung has spent years trying to make foldables feel familiar. The Fold8 will show how much of that work reaches the checkout.

Samsung’s hardware pitch is restrained. The company highlights two old foldable pain points: weight and endurance. There is little attempt to cast the Fold8 as a dramatic redesign. The local page reads like a flagship-phone page with a hinge attached, which is probably the point.

Price is where the device still feels specialised. Samsung’s Australian pre-order store lists the 256GB model at $2,699, the 512GB version at $2,999 and the 1TB configuration at $3,599. Those prices keep the Fold8 well outside the mainstream phone market, even before buyers add cases, insurance or a plan.

That is still a narrow audience.

Distribution may help. Australian plan-and-deal trackers at WhistleOut were already pulling together carrier and retailer offers, suggesting the Fold8 is being handled through regular flagship channels and Samsung’s own store.

CCS Insight chief analyst Ben Wood told CNBC that Samsung’s timing matters because the foldables market may soon become more crowded.

“2026 is a huge year for foldables with the near certainty that Apple will be unleashing a foldable iPhone later in the year.”

Wood also said the launch “underlines the fact that Samsung is keen to maintain a competitive price point”. In Australia, that points to a $2,699 entry price and no upward reset for the new model. The phone is expensive, but the strategy is defensive as much as premium.

Samsung now has a fixed local date, visible carrier pathways and enough pricing detail for buyers weighing the Fold8 with the rest of the premium phone market. The harder test comes after pre-orders, when the company sees how many Australians treat a foldable as a normal upgrade.
